Attention all writers! Upcoming spring writing contests…

Hello writers,

We wanted to share the following information with you regarding upcoming writing contests… these are great ways to potentially make a little extra cash or get your work published!

March Deadlines

  • James Jones First Novel Fellowship – deadline March 1: submit a two-page outline and the first 50 pages of a novel-in-progress by mail or online.  Entry fee is $25/ submission, and prizes are $10,000 (first prize) and two $750 runner-up prizes. 
  • Gulf Coast Contests – deadline March 15: submit EITHER one unpublished story or essay (up to 25 pages, double spaced) OR up to five unpublished poems (up to 10 pages, double spaced).  Entry fee is $23, and prizes are $1,500 and publication (first prize), $250 (runner-up prize)
  • Bevel Summers Prize for the Short-Short Story – deadline March 31: submit a story up to 1,000 words.  No entry fee, and prize is $500 and publication in Shenandoah.
  • Tom Howard/ John H. Reid Short Story Contest – deadline March 31: submit any type of short story, essay, or prose up to 5,000 words.  Entry fee is $15, prizes are $3000, $1000, $400, $250, $150 and publication on website.

April Deadlines

  • Ploughshares Emerging Writer’s Contest – deadline April 2: submit fiction or nonfiction up to 5,000 wds.  Entry fee is $20 and prize is $1000 and publication
  • The Writer Short-Story Contest – deadline April 30: submit unpublished short-stories up to 2000 wds.  Entry fee is $10, and prizes are $1000, $300, and $200.

May Deadlines

  • William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition – deadline May 1: submit unpublished work (novels, novellas, novels-in-progress, short stories, essays, poetry).  Entry fees vary by category and prizes are $750-$7500, varies by category.
  • Lush Triumphant Literary Awards Competition – deadline May 15: submit unpublished fiction up to 3,000 wds, creative nonfiction up to 4,000 wds.  Entry fee is $25, and prizes are $750 and publication (first place) and $250 and publication (runner-up).
